OMG, Karz is back, ladies and gentlemen

I guess after a while, the sheer stupidity of it all wears off on your senses. You decide to de-sensitise yourself to the mindless inanity thats been churned in the greater good of Indian cinema. And these days, the Great and Mighty production houses have taken it upon themselves that what, we the Indian Movie fan want to watch is remakes of the ones which are produced (never mind the fact that they are the intellectual creations of Masters who were good story-tellers and better businessmen with their products) and entertain us till we leave the theaters, bleary eyed and content.

From reel to real, it’s Salman’s turn

Maybe what goes around comes around. Maybe its the Circle of Life nudging us to wake up, give up our selective vision and smell the coffee. A chinkara doesn’t have voting rights. Nor does it belong to a notified community, scheduled in a special section in our Constitution. Hell, it doesn’t even own a ration card.

Patriotism, Bollywood ishtyle.

The Deshbhakth of them all was Manoj Kumar, who with his monotonously similar theme that he followed through with in a slew of movies tried to find a place in the Bollywood Hall of Greats in the Patriotic Section. His magnum opus (to this day, for me personally, it’s one of the greatest laugh riots) was Kranti, released in 1981.

The strange legacy of Mother India

If Mother India were to be made and released in 2007, with not even a single change in the script as compared to the way in which it was conceived in 1957, how would it have fared at the Box Office now? How would the current generation react to the mother of the family tilling the land with her husband, exhorting the villagers who are fleeing the drought-stricken, parched lands to stay back, and, at last, witnessing justice delivered through the twin barrels of a country rifle and a shot which still rings across the Bollywood Starscape?

The last laugh is on PARTNER, worth $30 million!

A shakedown of lethargic and numb brains, whose only source of inspiration for a new movie is the latest arrival of DVD’s in the neighborhood rentals adda. As expected, K Sera Sera and Eros along with the director has feigned ignorance of the whole matter. That is how we play in these times of media hype. Feign ignorance. And the miss out on the big picture. The big picture that the major Hollywood production companies are planning to remake their classics, to fit indian sensibilities and do not want to be caught in the wrong foot, at any time.

11 underdogs with hockey sticks, a coach and a World Cup

Whatever said and done, I am looking forward to seeing our take on a bunch of feisty minds touch glory with a little help from a stubbly, middle -ged coach waiting for his final redemption. Regardless of the strong deja vu that would come around in every second scene (from the ghosts of Hollywood sports movies, past and present), Chak De promises to offer something different than the current staple dished out from our production houses these days.
